Can't You Sleep, Little Bear?, written by Martin Waddell and illustrated by Barbara Firth, most likely the only children's book that was inspired by a publisher's logo (the Candlewick bear). More than 100,000 copies are sold this first year alone.

Farmer Duck, written by Martin Waddell and illustrated by Kate Greenaway award-winning artist Helen Oxenbury. This tale, about the lazy farmer and the hard-working duck who gets up with the cows, goes on to win many other honors.

Everyone's favorite way to say, "I Love You": Guess How Much I Love You, by Sam McBratney, illustrated by Anita Jeram.

The Christmas Miracle of Jonathan Toomey, by Susan Wojciechowski, illustrated by P.J. Lynch. The New York Times Book Review says it is "unfolded with such mastery, humor, and emotional force that we are entirely in its power."

It's Perfectly Normal: Changing Bodies, Growing Up, Sex, and Sexual Health, by Robie H. Harris, illustrated by Michael Emberley. Widely reviewed and much discussed, this book eventually earns 14 prestigious honors, including "best book of the year" from Publishers Weekly and School Library Journal.

My Very First Mother Goose, a collaboration between world-renowned folklorist Iona Opie and acclaimed illustrator Rosemary Wells, is voted one of the best-illustrated children's books by The New York Times Book Review and eventually reaps more than a dozen additional awards. USA Today says this book "should be the gift every newborn receives and every toddler is read from." (Its huge success leads to a companion volume, Here Comes Mother Goose, the following year and four board books in 1998.)

The Christmas Miracle of Jonathan Toomey continues to rack up honors, this time with a prestigious Christopher Medal for "affirming the highest values of the human spirit." Critics predict that this book would quickly establish itself as a best-selling classic. (The critics were right. Holiday sales have increased every year.)

The meteoric success of Guess How Much I Love You inspires an entire product line: the best-selling board book, a boxed set, a calendar, a pop-up edition, a baby record book, and plush toys.
