I’ve loved writing for as long as I can remember. When I was a child, I also loved singing, roller-skating, and swinging from a big tree on a rope-swing.
I still love to sing, and I expect I would still enjoy roller-skating and rope-swinging if I ever got the chance.
I grew up in quite a small town. Now I live and work in London, which is a big, beautiful city.
About My Work
Sometimes I find writing difficult, but writing Our Very Own Dog was easy; it almost wrote itself. Above all, I wanted to show, from the inside, how special it is to live with and care for a dog. Sophie was a rescue dog who came to live with my family when I was little. As soon as I started writing about her, memories came flooding back — more than I knew I had.
It’s true that she was nervous of my father at first, and that he wisely let her learn to trust him in her own way.
It’s also true that she won first prize at a dog show when she was covered in mud and grass stains!
Once I had the main text in place, I enjoyed adding extra facts. There are so many fascinating things to learn about dogs and dog care. I hope that, for some readers, this book will be the beginning of a journey — a journey of thinking, as well as learning, about dogs.
I think Salvatore Rubbino’s illustrations for this book are gorgeous and funny. They’re also quite magical for me, because when I look at them, it feels almost as if Sophie has come back to life.
Three Things You Didn’t Know About Me
1. I count on my fingers.
2. I first met one of my close friends when I was six and she was five.
