Dear Diary…
ages 9 – 13

Castle Diary
Experience medieval daily life in a castle through the diary of Toby, a young page whose richly detailed and often humorous entries have been vividly "transcribed" by Richard Platt and gloriously "illuminated" by Chris Riddell. You can:

Download Activity Kit now.
Activity Kit includes:

"The Hungry Knight Diner Menu"

Select entries from Castle Diary to read aloud.
Then ask children to write (or draw) their own entry from a day in their lives, or ask them to imagine what their lives would be like in another place and time and to write a journal entry describing it. Share the results. Some useful questions:
• Imagine your diary will be read centuries from now. What details will most interest readers?
• How are Toby’s daily rituals and responsibilities different from your own?
• Would you like to have lived in Toby’s time? Why or why not?

Create a Medieval Menu
Using the Castle Diary index’s lively descriptions of food, children can design their own menu with appetizers, beverages, main courses, and desserts.
