ages 9 13
Castle Diary
Experience medieval daily life in a castle through the diary of Toby, a
young page whose richly detailed and often humorous entries have been vividly
"transcribed" by Richard
Platt and gloriously "illuminated" by
Chris Riddell. You can:
Download Activity Kit
now. Activity Kit includes:
"The Hungry Knight Diner Menu"
Select entries from Castle Diary to read aloud.
Then ask children to write (or draw) their own entry from a day in their
lives, or ask them to imagine what their lives would be like in another place
and time and to write a journal entry describing it. Share the results. Some
useful questions:
Imagine your diary will be read centuries from now. What details will
most interest readers?
How are Tobys daily rituals and responsibilities different from
your own?
Would you like to have lived in Tobys time? Why or why not?
Create a Medieval Menu
Using the Castle Diary indexs lively descriptions of food,
children can design their own menu with appetizers, beverages, main courses,
and desserts.
