Assistant Editor

Reports to: Editorial Director and Executive Editorial Director


Candlewick Press, a leading publisher of books for children located in Somerville, MA seeks an Assistant Editor. Reporting to an Editorial Director and an Executive Editorial Director, the Assistant Editor will provide administrative and editorial support for a variety of titles and projects on our Walker US, Candlewick Entertainment, and core Candlewick lists.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Review and recommend titles for our digital picture book list, and solicit feedback from Sales and Rights.
  • Coordinate the editorial portion of digital picture book production including markups and proof review.
  • Attend bi-weekly digital picture book team meetings
  • Help develop storylines and scripts for select Candlewick Entertainment properties; liaison with outside licensors as well as designers and developers in other cross company divisions
  • US editor for 6-8 UK-originated picture books per year, including drafting jacket copy, presenting at sales conference, Americanization, and reviewing proofs
  • Provide admin support including creating presentations for seasonal launch meetings, ordering contractual copies for licensors and creators, copywriting, tracking deadlines, organizing meetings, and support on paperwork for frontlist titles, and drafting jacket copy for a variety of genres and age ranges
  • Attend and take minutes for US and UK fiction meetings as needed
  • Liaise with authors and agents on ongoing projects
  • Read and prepare reader'ss reports for submissions and active projects
  • Prepare packages for mailing to authors, agents, and others.
  • Act as point of contact for NY-based Supervisor

Required Skills and Experience:
At Assistant Editor level we are looking for candidates who have proven relevant experience in an Editorial Assistant role. Candidates must be extremely organized, attentive to detail, and able to multitask and prioritize. The ideal candidate will be a self-starter and possess a strong interest in children's trade publishing, a motivation to learn, exceptional English language skills (proofreading, spelling, grammar), and strong communication skills. They should be proficient in Adobe Acrobat, Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and other common computer programs. A knowledge of and comfort with the interaction of text and illustration is preferred.
