I am a freelance illustrator and children’s author based in Bristol, UK. I have been doodling and drawing since way back in the early 1980s, lying on my parents’ living room floor, grasping a felt-tip pen. I began my career in animation, working in children's TV and websites, before I decided to venture forth and tell my own stories.
All my stories begin with a character — a simple illustration of an animal, person, or thing. I tend to flick through my doodles and sketches until a particular character stands out and a backstory begins to emerge. I've always been a fan of books that champion the underdog or center on a hapless hero. It's easier to empathize with a flawed character as, let's face it, nobody's perfect.
Three facts about me:
1. I have a pet springer-cocker spaniel named Ivor who will happily chase a tennis ball all day long.
2. I grew up on air bases as a kid and have therefore developed a geeky ability for recognizing military aircraft.
4. I can't count to three.
