From my childhood I remember long hot summers, ice-cream vans, paddling pools, trips to France, making things, drawing, painting, reading, writing, the local library, poems, stories, songs, my grandmother playing the piano, teatime, our cat Ginger, my dad’s ideas, my mum’s baking, my brother’s pets, playing games, dressing up, Halloween, bonfires, fireworks, Christmas, making an igloo, making dens, and climbing trees. My hobbies are looking, listening, laughing, learning, loving, and lying in. I think that I have always been writing and making pictures, and I hope that I always will.
I am a very messy painter, so when I work with paper I really enjoy that the colors will never spill, run or go muddy, that I can move things around on the page, that I can scratch my nose and not leave a mark, and mistakes can be trimmed. I like that paper gives everything color, texture, shape, and form.
I really enjoy the whole journey of making a book, exploring ideas, searching for possibilities, waiting for the unknown and the unexpected to arrive, being surprised, and being excited by a new idea and having fun making it. I also really enjoy the surprise when someone tells me they like my books!
