John Marsden

John Marsden grew up in Australia and decided at age nine to become an author. But first he became a teacher. An avid reader, he hoped to share his enthusiasm with his teenage students, who seemed generally indifferent toward books. His first young adult novel, So Much to Tell You, which he wrote in just three weeks, won many awards and became a bestseller. All the while, John kept teaching, and in 2006 he founded his own school, Candlebark. His subsequent books sold millions of copies both in Australia and around the world. Today John Marsden continues to write and to oversee Candlebark’s development as an inspiring educational environment. About Hamlet, he says, “Hamlet’s done a good job of haunting my life. I read the play when I was sixteen, saw a film of it when I was seventeen, and haven’t been able to shake the story since.”
