When I was little I spent hours and hours drawing at the dining-room table. I liked doing lots of other stuff too, but drawing was the one thing that was just for me. I’d create lots of silly characters that would often be saying strange and goofy things. Later this turned into a career making greeting cards and now books for kids.
I still love to draw, but mostly I write these days. It’s good to sit down and practice writing and have fun with it. But it’s also good to get inspired by things around you and write spontaneously. Cars Galore happened just that way. One day, I was driving around with my family and started making up silly verses about cars. “Black car, green car, nice car, mean car” . . . .things like that. My two sons started cracking up and joining in, and—go figure—my first children’s book was born! It’s been beyond fun to write it and work with Bob Staake, the amazing artist for our book.
Three Things You Might Not Know About Me:
1. The first car I ever owned was a truck with a leaky camper shell on it. The rain got in and some mushrooms grew on the stinky rug inside. Gross. Oh, and it had a horn that went “OWOOOOGA!”
2. I like to play the guitar and write songs when no one’s looking.
3. Once, a long time ago, I went to Africa and climbed to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro. It was exhausting. I’m still tired.
